xmas treeMEDFORD, Ore. — Christmas tree farms in the Rogue Valley are already breaking records in tree sales. The U Cut Christmas Tree Farm opened its doors to families Friday.

Larry Ryerson is one of the owners of the farm, deeply rooted in family generations. Ryerson and his family have grown trees on the land since the 1970’s.

The crew works the whole year for a month of Christmas tree sales. With Friday being the first day of the season, the farm sold a record 110 trees on opening day. The last record set was at 98 trees in one day.

Even with the leap in sales, this year wasn’t an easy crop. The family had to replant the seedlings three different times this spring because of the dry weather.

“This last summer we had a drought and we had hot weather and it kind of took a toll on a lot of the trees. I do irrigate, but I probably didn’t irrigate enough, so we lost an awful lot of seedlings,” Ryerson said.

Last year the farm was only open for seven days with a big snow storm and quick buyers.

Owners of the farm say most families go for the trees that around 6 feet tall. Those trees take eight years to grow to that height.

With only a few Christmas tree farms left in the Rogue Valley, the U Cut farm expects to sell out quickly like it did last year. Until then, it will stay open every weekend letting families come pick out their perfect Christmas tree for the holidays.

The tree farm is located at 3132 Camp Baker Road in Medford.
